Hardwood flooring and stairs are a beautiful extension of your home. Hardwood adds elegance, warmth and value to your home in ways that other materials cannot. Taking care of the flooring doesn’t have to be a huge ordeal, as long as you know who to go to! Here at D.R. Home Renovation we take pride and make sure your home keeps looking it’s best.
Damage to your flooring can happen in many different ways, moving in, children at play, or maybe water damage. Water damage can happen through exposures from the elements through cracks that open as our homes move or issues that unexpectedly happen within the home. For water damage there’s a few signs to look for. Cupping is one of water damage. Cupping can be seen where the middle of the wood plank is bulging upwards, sometimes the ends sink lower than the rest of the edges in the planks. There could also be dark or stained spots that didn’t used to be visible in the wood before. This could be an early sign that mold is settling in. Either way we’re here to help.
When your floors get damaged it can be a challenge to try and match the color and look of the rest of your flooring. Replacing the entire floor should typically be seen as a last option. The cost of purchasing new wood, removing the existing flooring, prep and installation will always cost more than refinishing the existing flooring. If there’s dents or deep scratches, regular sweeping can help prevent this from occurring on your floors. Dirt left for long periods of time acts as an abrasive on your polished floors. Dents and scratches can be eliminated using a filler, some sanding and finally refinishing the rest of the floor to match. At some instances, this can also be achieved with water damage, depending on the source of the moisture damaging your flooring. If it’s discovered that the damage has gone too far, unfortunately, replacement of the flooring is the only route.
